Sandie Callahan, a 25-year-old diving enthusiast from tropical North Queensland, has been selected to represent Australia at the Miss Scuba International pageant in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. Living her dream, Sandie works for a small, family-owned Great Barrier Reef tour company, where she helps to create unforgettable experiences aboard their luxury super yacht, the 'Evolution'.
Sandie's role as a Divemaster Intern allows her to engage with people from all walks of life, guiding them through the wonders of the reef. Whether it's leading confident swimmers to discover vibrant marine life or assisting first-time snorkelers from landlocked countries, Sandie’s days are filled with the magic of the ocean.
One of her primary responsibilities is snorkel guiding, where she uses a life ring attached to a rope to assist guests around the reef. Some days, she encounters passengers who are confident and excited to explore, while other days, she helps those who have never seen the ocean and have been taught to fear water from a young age. It’s on these days that Sandie’s dedication and compassion truly shine.
Sandie describes the indescribable feeling of helping someone overcome their fear of water, transforming a perceived life-or-death situation into an awe-inspiring adventure. She reassures nervous snorkelers with calm words, guiding them from the boat into the ocean, where they can take their first look at the Great Barrier Reef.
